It's soon to be the Fall season in the Northern Hemisphere, yet here in San Diego we experience warm days and sunshine almost year-round. At our little ethical clothing shop we focus on elevated yet casual apparel pieces that can easily be layered and worn to a beach bonfire or a day at the office (or both!). At Thread Spun, we're always keeping it eco-friendly, so to us transitional Fall style means things like sustainable denim paired with organic cotton tees and light hemp jackets and unique, handmade swimwear with an ethically-produced raglan thrown over top. Of course, no sustainable outfit is complete without handmade and conflict-free jewelry and a great pair of leather slides, so we've got you covered there too. Read on for our curated collection of ethical apparel staples alongside a few fresh, new arrivals for Fall and see how we style them for a laid back look.

Jumpsuits

Virtually effortless, comfortable and fashionable - jumpsuits are the true triple threat. We are always searching for the most flattering ethical apparel, and nothing fits the bill quite like jumpsuits.

Slip on the Hemp Button Front Jumper by Jungmaven, made to fit a touch oversized and perfect for wearing with or without a layer underneath. Throw on a light jacket or sweatshirt over or under for those cooler mornings and evenings. This jumper is a timeless wardrobe staple that we've carried in the shop for years and that will last you longer than that as it is made with a hemp and cotton blend and meant to carry you through every season. Shown below in Coyote (tan) and Terracotta, we've also got it in Navy and Mustard. Whatever color of sustainable jumpsuit floats your boat, we've got it.

If you prefer a jumpsuit with sleeves, the Utility Jumpsuit by Outerknown is probably more your style. This is a timeless military-inspired jumpsuit made with a butter soft herringbone fabric that is the perfect blend of linen and organic cotton. It features a tapered, cropped leg, a removable belt, and side seam pockets, and we've got it in both Olive and a dreamy white Outerknown calls Salt. Dress it up or dress it down, this sustainable jumpsuit is ready to roll.

Sustainable Denim

The only thing more versatile than a jumpsuit is a pair of sustainably-made denim jeans. Boyish Jeans is a collection of sustainable women's denim designed in Los Angeles, and each collection is centered on vintage silhouettes with a modern update. At the core of all Boyish collections lies a deep commitment to leaving as little impact on the earth as possible. Therefore, Boyish utilizes ethical and sustainable practices when developing and manufacturing its products. All jeans are produced with sustainable fabrics through a completely environmentally-friendly and cruelty-free process.

The Charley Rigid Wide Leg Jean is a classic pair of pants to wear through the seasons, and we love this Vintage White color for transitioning from Summer to Fall. That said, you'll want to wear them year-round thanks to the flattering high waist and fun wide leg that pairs perfectly with a lightweight top, like the Freya Linen Top by Rachel Pally. This shirt shows just the right amount of skin, it's casual yet sexy with full sleeves that add a delicate touch.

Another great option is the Charley in Black Beauty, especially when paired with one of our favorite Outerknown tops, the Neptune Tank (also available as a tee!). There's just something about exposed buttons.

If a skinny leg is more of your thing, you'll love the Billy by Boyish in Krush Groove, a dark eco wash pair of upcycled jeans that use GRS certified recycled cotton. They are reminiscent of the most perfect hip hugging vintage denim with a high waist and rigid, skinny leg. This zero waste jean will be your new favorite second skin.

And if you're looking to add an edge to your sustainable, transitional Fall style you'll need a pair of the Ziggy in Footloose. High-waisted with a relaxed leg, the Ziggy looks as good paired with heels as it does with sneakers. Style these jeans with a powerful graphic tee by Dazey L.A. and lightweight hemp Olympic Jacket, or with a the Abba linen tank from Sugar Candy Mountain, which is the perfect base piece for any look. However you style your Boyish denim, feel good knowing that your sustainable jeans were ethically made.

Intimates and Swim

Handmade swimwear by Thief and Bandit paired with hemp sweatshirts by Jungmaven in neutral tones

Thief and Bandit swimwear and intimates paired with the Jungmaven Bonfire Raglan is quintessential southern California Fall. Designed and handmade in house in Nova Scotia Canada, Thief and Bandit ethical apparel features fun, handprinted designs. Whether you're rocking a pair of the comfortable, high-waisted underwear while cozy at home or 100% recycled swimwear on one of our seemingly endless warm afternoons, you're sure to be happy in Thief and Bandit. The jewel tones perfectly complement the Bonfire Raglan, a sweatshirt that offers a casually-cute fit with a ribbed neckline and cuffs on the arms and waist. Made with a hemp and organic cotton blend, throw on this mid-weight sweatshirt when you hop out of the ocean and stay cozy by the bonfire.

Mohinders Shoes

In Southern California, transitional Fall footwear means Mohinders slides! Dress them up or down or add a cute sock underneath for a little extra warmth. For an elevated transitional Fall look, try the Oiled Leather Solid Slides (pictured below right). Hand-oiled with a blend of plant-based oils and beeswax, these leather slides are as comfortable as they are stylish. They'll take you from a day at the office to a night on the town, no problem. If you like your footwear a bit more funky, maybe the Diamond Slide (pictured below left in tan) is more your style.

Mohinders works with families of 3rd-and 4th-generation shoemakers and leather tanners and strives to uphold respectful design and sustainability from start to finish. This means heirloom, regional processes, intentional choices to reduce waste and use lower-impact materials, and creating shoes that last and age beautifully. Shop founder, Heidi, wears her own beautifully worn-in pair in the bottom right image, and can attest to their longevity and the compliments you will receive when wearing them!

Ethical Jewelry

Ethically-produced jewelry isn't seasonal, it's timeless. At Thread Spun we have curated a selection of handmade jewelry that is so unique and well-made, each piece is sure to become a family heirloom and last throughout every season. That said, we love a pop of silver for Fall, like the Sterling Silver Equinox Ring by Amanda Hunt and the Silver Arc Ring by Artifacts, worn above.

Another gorgeous silver piece we love to rock (especially with a pair of white jeans) is the patchwork style ring by Sarah Safavi. Made with solid Sterling silver, these are made with classic inlay techniques, cutting and polishing small pieces of ethically-mined stones to fit together perfectly. If you prefer ethical gold jewelry, go with the Token Stone Necklace or a fun and funky wrap bracelet that doubles as a necklace by Abacus Row. You'll love the daintiness of the silk cord paired with matte glass and gold Japanese seed beads.
