Vegetable tanned leather refers to leather that is tanned with the tannins naturally found in the wood, bark, leaves, buds, stems, fruits, seeds, roots, and galls of plants. Pennyroyal utilizes mimosa bark in tanning their leather, resulting in a more sustainable production process. The waste created by veg tanning is used for fertilizer on ranches surrounding tanneries, versus the majority of leather that is tanned using chrome, an extremely toxic heavy metal. 

Due to the careful tanning process and the natural tannins used, this leather develops a rich and beautiful patina, getting better with time and use.
